Last week I had the opportunity to attend the Social Stylin’ Roundtable for U by Kotex Get With Generation Know campaign. Generation Know dares to change and challenge the world’s view on periods, vaginas, and females in general. Kotex ambassadors Dr. Vanessa Schick and Kat Lazo led the discussion about everything under the sun.

The day began with breakfast and hair and makeup by The House of Makeup. We were in full glam mode especially with our awesome eyelashes. After our glam session, it was time for the photo shoot. The photographer AJ was so funny and it was great shooting with him.

After the morning rundown, we set up for the reason we all gathered together that day, to have girl talk. This was such an amazing experience. The panel consisted of 12 bloggers (Caitlin Boyle-moderator) and 2 Kotex Ambassadors (Dr. Vanessa Schick and Kat Lazo). Although it was a little nerve racking with the camera, we covered so many topics from the media’s portrayal of women, the role of social media and self-image, the myths behind periods, and so much more. I don’t think I’ve said the word vagina so much ever in life! It was a little strange at first, but by lunch the strange feeling had subsided. It was great to talk and share our ideas without any fears or judgment. We shared our most embarrassing stories and even the nicknames that we have for vaginas. Thanks to Oprah, va-jay-jay, is very popular.

After our roundtable discussion we had an amazing three-course luncheon. It began with a Mediterranean chopped salad that looked to good to eat, but we all know that bloggers love to eat. Next, for the non-vegetarians, we had grilled brussels sprouts, grilled chicken breast, and scalloped potatoes. Lastly, for dessert we had a chocolate caramel pastry with blueberries. Just thinking about the food makes me want to find the chef who created such delectable dishes.

Once lunch we finished lunch, instagramming photos from our lunch, and catching up on social media, we had small group discussions to go further in to the conversation. We continued talking about busting myths, breaking the silence, and changing the message surrounding the female body and periods. These interviews were very candid and heart felt.

One thing that I took away from this day was the need to keeping the youth informed. Many girls find out information about their bodies from their peers or the media. Often times, this information is incorrect and misleading. We need to take more of a proactive approach with sharing our knowledge with the younger generation. It is a terrible feeling going around misinformed, so to protect the younger generation and ourselves we have to SPEAK UP and SPEAK OUT. We can’t be afraid to talk about what was once a taboo topic. That is the only way to break the silence. We have to share our knowledge and change the stigma surrounding females, vaginas, periods and more.

Brand Statement U by Kotex Brand is committed to empowering girls to change the way the world thinks about periods and vaginas through Generation Know, the first generation of girls comfortable asking questions, gaining real knowledge and spreading information about their health and bodies to others. So I was on Essence.com and saw a picture of Lala in a bikini and there was a bit of a dispute in the comment section of how she looked. Most of the commenters stated something along these lines “she looks great real women have curves.” They then proceeded to comment on the dimples and cellulite shown on her thighs and other things as well. I shook my head a little because this topic has been on my mind quite some time and I’ve wanted to write a post about it, but I guess now is better than never so here it goes.

When it comes to titles, people always want to be “politically correct” to not ruffle anyone’s feathers. I’ve even fallen in to this category with my post series “For Curvy Girls” which I am considering changing the name for this very reason. With titles and labels people feel like they are bound to a certain category. No one wants to be labeled in a negative light. We try so often to be politically correct that we become somewhat delusional.

For many years people have been advocating for more realistic images of women across the United States on TV, in magazines, and in various advertisements. No one really wanted to see very thin models wearing clothes targeting women who are more than double their size. I am not sure when, but the term “curvy” was born and that replaced the categories of being plus size and the word no one wants to use fat.

No one wants to be labeled, fat, large, or big, even if it is the reality and so it seemed like many women size 10 and up adopted the term curvy. Then we kept seeing real women have curves and all of the photos were of women at least a size 10. I looked in the mirror and jokingly said, “wow I must not be a real woman then.”

I have a naturally small frame. I do work out occasionally, but that’s just to be healthy not to be a size 0. I wear between a size 2 or 4 depending on the designer and the cut. Most if not all of my clothing are labeled as smalls. I was my “biggest” last summer weighing about 135 pounds. It wasn’t until 2007 that I began weighing anything over 120.

Anyone that knows me know that one of my favorite things to do is eat. My metabolism is extremely fast and so I don’t put on weight as quickly as other people. Now that I am getting older, that is starting to change.

Dove and other beauty companies have their “Real Beauty” campaigns which are great because now you get to see a more realistic picture of women in magazines, on billboards, and also TV, but what about the women who like me have naturally small frames. We are shunned and ridiculed because we wear a size 4 and sometimes smaller. I know some of you may say, “well we are talking about the people who want to be a size 0 and starve themselves to be skinny.” No I do not fit in to that category, but when will there be a campaign embracing all sizes and body types? We go from one extreme to the next without finding the happy medium.

When will we really define what curves are? Are curves only for women who wear a size 12 and up? Are curves just for women who have a large butt and wide hips? This term is misleading because there is no clear definition. I’ve seen women who are more “lumpy,” for lack of a better word, than curvy, but that’ve adopted that term.

As a personal stylist I have to learn about each and every body type and what clothing options are best for each as well to make my clients feel comfortable and embrace their bodies. There are some body types where “curves” are not as defined or they have a smaller frame so do I tell them they are not “real women?” For my clients who are full-figured do I provide them with pieces that show off their curves because that’s what’s popular rather than pieces that are more structured and will help enhance their look overall?

I’m tired of seeing on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram “shout out to the girls who are not a size 4, real women have curves.” So because you are a size 10, 18, or 24 you are more of a woman than I am? Ok cool. For part of my high school life and most of my college life I’ve kept seeing and hearing “Skinny women are evil” thanks to Monique. So what if I like salad and smoothies, I can eat cheeseburger as well, but today I choose not to.

The “curvy syndrome” as I like to put it, has made women embrace being unhealthy. I don’t think curvy means eating two or three meals at a time and not working out. Everyone is not going to be skinny or have small body frames but let’s face it; the obesity rate for women, especially women of color, and even children is alarming. Of course you should embrace yourself and your body type, but don’t use it as an excuse to be demeaning or unhealthy. I understand that some of the women who are larger and considered “curvy” are this way because of health related issues, medication, depression, etc. but we all, no matter what size, should focus on living healthy lives instead of being categorized.

Some of you may say that those of larger statures have been shunned for so long that now it is finally time for you to shine. I totally agree! It has been all about being skinny and slim and showing almost unrealistic images of women since forever. I get it, but now that you know both sides of the spectrum shouldn’t all women and all sizes be embraced? Or are you out for payback and revenge because you were excluded for so long?

How about we move to real women are healthy. Let’s not focus on the exterior but do what is necessary to get ourselves right internally. Let’s have campaigns of women of all sizes and shapes visiting their doctors regularly, eating healthier, managing appropriate food portions, and also working out. Being a size 2 or 22 shouldn’t matter and your size should not determine of you are considered a “real woman.

Happy Friday Ladies! It is SCORCHING in NYC this week and I am loving every moment of it (Summer is my favorite season). I wanted to share with you guys my “My Must Haves” for the Summer.  Key factors to my beauty and fashion choices during the Summer is being comfortable, cool , minimizing (less is more) while still looking GREAT! 🙂

Beauty & Health:

Summer Essentials: Beauty

NARS Malaga Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer – In this heat it is way too hot to wear full out foundation so instead I opt for a tinted moisturizer with spf.  I love this one from Nars because it has full coverage but is very light on the skin.

Maybelline Volum’ Express The Falsies Flared Waterproof Mascara – I love Maybelline mascara – I’ve tried all the other high end brands and Maybelline definitely is equal if not better.  Their waterproof mascara does not disappoint- this mascara lasts me all day and I don’t have to worry about any embarrassing racoon eyes.

NARS Sheer Lipstick – Belle de Jour: This summer is all about light and sheer makeup.  Nothing looks fresher to me than a nude lip.  I love this NARS version because it lasts all day and keeps my lips moisturized.

Tarte EmphasEYES™ For Brows High Definition Eyebrow Pencil: Did I tell you guys I am obsessed with my eyebrows? No seriously, I take them VERY SERIOUS.  This eyebrow pencil by Tarte gets my eyebrows looking PERFECT yet natural.  My biggest beauty MUST HAVE.

Flora by Gucci: I love all Gucci’s perfume, they are always light and delicious and Flora stays true to all this.  Flora smell’s like Summer (I swear) – what does Summer smell like you ask?  Go to Macy’s and smell Flora and than you will understand what I mean! 🙂

Fresh Brown Sugar Body Polish, 7 oz.:  Between all the sweat and oils that get in my skin during the Summer I always like a good exfoliator scrub that removes all the dead skin and gets my skin soft and smooth.  This Brown Sugar Body Polish by Fresh works amazing and smell’s even better.

Clinique 3-Step Skin Care System For Skin Types 3, 4 Combination Oily Skin:  My skin and I have a love/hate battle.  Over the past year we have been growing a better relationship thanks to Clinique.  I love this 3 step system because it help to almost eliminate that “oily” look your face gets during the Summer.

Mixed Chicks Leave In Conditioner: My hair is naturally curly but I tend to get a lot of blow outs and I wear it straight most of the time.  However, in Summer…straight hair is way too difficult to keep up with in the heat.  This Leave In Conditioner gets my curls looking gorgeous – defined, moisturized and bouncy.

Marc Jacobs Cranberry Splash: Guys….this perfume is amazing (if you like fruity scents).  Another Summery scent that’s just perfect for the hot weather.  Whenever I wear it I always have at least 5-10 people asking me what I’m wearing.

Clean & Clear Absorbing Sheets:  Let’s face it.  We all sweat and we all tend to have oil faces during the Summer.  I swear by there oil absorbing sheets by Clean & Clear, they are something I do not leave home without.

Bobbi Brown Metallic Eye Shadow: Metallic eyes are in this season and my favorite metallic shadow is Gold (it looks so good against brown skin :)).  This eyeshadow by Bobbi Brown literally lasts ALL DAY. Believe me, I am constantly rubbing my eyes and touching my face and this shadow is still intact at the end of the day.

Fashion:

Summer Essentials: Fashion

Maxi Dresses are a must have this Summer for me.  They are cool, comfortable and are very versatile so you can go to work and still hit happy hour afterwards lookin’ fly.  I’m especially loving all the semi sheer and pleated ones as well as the black and white striped ones.

Peplum dresses are another item that can be worn for both work and play.  I love the peplum  silhouette ((dresses and shirts) because it is ultra feminine and looks great on every women.  It’s just so chic and ladylike to me!  I like all the peplums in bold colors and patterns for this season.

Sheer, Collared Shirts:  This is probably the item I own the most of.  I have at least 12 of these shorts (THEY ARE EVERYWHERE) and I love them.  You can wear them with shorts, skirts, jeans….styling with these is endless.  I can’t stop buying them (I am wearing one as I type this….) lol.

Vertical Stripe Jeans/Leggings: I love these black and white vertical stripe jeans (I also have some of the leggings) they scream summer to me (it’s like wearing white jeans, except you don’t have to worry about spilling something on them) and they literally go with so many different things.  LOVE!

Wedges: I’m going to be honest – I don’t wear a lot of heels.  NYC is not the place (IMO) to be wearing 6″ Louboutins especially when you are walking and taking public transportation.  So, when I really want to wear heels I usually opt for a wedge.  Wedges can be very sexy yet comfortable (even at 5″ high) and can be dressed up or down.

Embellished Flat Sandals:  As I stated above, I don’t really do heels in NYC but that doesn’t mean I don’t want my shoes to be FLY.  I always make sure that if I wear flats that they stand out, whether they be embellished (chains, bows etc) or have a bold color.  Who says flat shoes can’t be fashionable??

Neon Handbag: I love Neon but I don’t own that much Neon clothing however when I want to add a little splash of neon to my outfit I grab my bag.  A neon bag adds something special to every outfit.

Collar Necklace:  These necklaces are a major MUST HAVE accessory for me.  I love to pair them with my sheer, collared shirts. 🙂

Straw Fedora: These just something about straw fedoras that scream “Summer” to me and I love to wear these hats ( I wear them with EVERYTHING, Maxi’s, Shorts, etc) plus…they are GREAT for a bad hair day.  You can walk around looking fly and no one even suspects what’s really going on under the hat.

Cat Eye Sunglasses: Cat Eye Sunglasses are ultra chic and look great on most face shapes.  If you haven’t got a pair yet – GET YOU SOME!
Well, those are my Beauty and Fashion must haves.  What are yours????

Summer, summer, summer time is playing in my head as I type this post. Memorial Day is next weekend and it seems like that is the unofficial start of the Summer Season, even though summer officially starts in June. I like to use Memorial Day as my “deadline” to make sure my body is in “shape.” Well I won’t make that deadline this year, unfortunately. So I have extended my deadline until the official start date of Summer. I have lost a significant amount of weight over the last few months, not by choice though. My weight tends to fluctuate and right now I am around the same weight I was two years ago.

It isn’t my weight that is my concern, my concern is really the lack of definition in certain areas. So I definitely need to tone. My target areas are abs, thighs, and butt. I think these are the target areas for most women.

One of my favorite magazines is Prevention. They always have great health tips and workout plans. So here are a few tips to get ready for the beach! Whether you will be wearing a bikin, tankini, monokini, or traditional one-piece, it is always a great idea to get in shape. Start now and say good bye to the cellulite, jiggly thighs, and the little tummy pouch.
