The Makeup Show has to be one of the largest beauty related shows in the country, but it is the largest event in New York City. People come from all over the country to attend this two day event where special Pro Discounts are available to makeup artists and other beauty enthusiasts.
At The Makeup Show, you are also able to partake in various classed taught by top beauty experts and makeup artists in the industry. There are free seminars and this year The Makeup Show introduced the career floor where advice was given on how to make it in the beauty industry.
All of the events were held at the beautiful and spacious Metropolitan Pavillion located on W. 18th street in Manhattan. The weekend started with the blogger preview where celebrity makeup artist James Vincent dished on his current favorite products from brands like Ruby Kisses, Kevyn Aucoin, MAC, The London Brush Company, Makeup Forever, Stila and Cinema Secrets more.
I love hearing James speak. He is so charismatic and funny. He gave detailed description of each item in the gift bags and shared why he loved them so much. Here are a few of the items
- Kevyn Aucoin white eyeshadow pencil. It can be used as a base, highlight, or as shadow
- Prime Color Creme Eyeshadow in Decadent
- Pencil Sharpener
- MACs Russian Red Matte Lipstick
- OCC Lip Tars in Tone and Strutter. James said he sometimes uses the lip tars as blush. He also uses the lip tars to create a monochromatic look and tinted moisturizer
- Glitter pigment in Ultra Marine and Red
More pics of products, artists, and a full recap of “Marketing You” with Michael Devellis and Crystal Wright after the jump
- Stila convertible eye color pencil in Ivy
The Ruby Kisses bag was filled with awesome goodies. There was
- Nail polish
- Bronzer (powder and creme)
- Eyeshadow primer
- Gel Liner
- Mascara
- 2 Duo eyeshadows
- Liquid eyeliner and much more
I only attended the actual show for one day which was Sunday May 15, 2011. Packed is not the word that I should use to describe this event, but that’s what I will use. My first stop on Sunday with Kim was the Pro Pod with Felicia Walker-Benson of This That Beauty and Jones Mag. She was giving advice on beauty blogging.
We then watched the beginning stages of the Ruby Kisses makeup artistry contest. Danielle from The Style and Beauty Doctor was a competitor
I purchased 3 pure powder glow blushes from Kevyn Aucoin, 2 for myself and 1 for my sister. I forgot to get a pic of her blush before I gave it to her.
We stopped at the OCC table to check out their new line of tinted moisturizers. They come in a variety of colors and the moisturizer is very light weight. It is not heavy or greasy. To get my perfect match, I would have to buy 2 or 3 shades.
There were some people with very unique hair styles. Animal print was big at the show.
Regie Wells was an exhibitor and speaker at The Makeup Show. He was promoting his line Hissy Fit. Reggie Wells is Oprah’s long time MUA. Yes he is the man that beats her flawless face.
The highlight of the show for me had to be the session with Crystal Wright and Michael Devellis. Crystal Wright is a motivational speaker, author, and advisor to freelance artists and stylists. Michael Devellis is the founder of The Powder Group which is responsible for the makeup show.
The focus of their session was “Marketing You.” They gave great advice on how to market yourself as a makeup artist or stylist. They also focused on branding, business cards, communication, and most importantly confidence. You have to be confident in your self and your abilities/services. They talked about professionalism, websites, portfolios, and much more.
After the session, I went to purchase Crystal’s book Crystal Wright’s Hair, Makeup and Fashion Styling Career Guide.
I am looking forward to The Makeup Show next year, and this year’s just ended. Until next time….

Great post. I should have gone.
Yes this is a great post. I heard that it was only open to professionals though…whomp whomp for me 🙁
