This past Tuesday I had the opportunity to attend the Smirnoff Sorbet Stir Up Your Summer Girl’s Night Out event held at the Ten Over Ten Salon given by the Glam Network. I could not have asked for a better event to end my night. First, the weather in NYC was simply amazing. The sun was shining bright and the temps were warm and with weather like that who wouldn’t want to have a pampering session with their girls?IMG_8239

When I arrived to the event with my friend Kim of Makeup by Kim Porter we were greeted with some refreshing drinks. Now when it is hot a nice cool cocktail is all you need to get the party started. So we had the options of the Smirnoff Sorbet Light Pomegranate Punch, the Smirnoff Sorbet Light Mango Passion Fizz, or the Smirnoff Sorbet Light Lemon Mojito. Since I love mango I went with the Mango Passion Fizz to start.

At the event we were offered the following services: manicures, pedicures, makeup application, massage, and a tarot card reading. Can you guess which services I made use of? If you said all with the exception of the card reading you are correct.

My nail tech for my pedi was Amy. She has been a nail tech for the last 8 years. The pedi was simply delightful. What I loved about Ten Over Ten was the cleanliness in addition to the excellent service. Amy paid close attention to each of my little piggies and even offered some advice for my itsy bitsy toenails to grow (It’s a struggle lol). During my pedicure Melissa from O So Chic and her friend Maxine joined us and it was just awesome girl talk as we were pampered by the nail techs.

After my pedi and second drink, Pomegranate Punch, I headed over to the sushi station and had just about every sushi and sashimi roll the reps from Haru had to offer. After I had a little snack and my third drink, Lemon Mojito, I had my makeup touched up. I know you are probably thinking you had three drinks, but the Smirnoff Sorbet Light is exactly that light.

After my makeup application and more sushi it was time for my mani. Yoon was so nice and she has been a nail tech for 20 years, but you would never know that by looking at her. For my nails I went with Essie Bachelorette Bash and headed over to the mani cam.

I usually don’t stay out too late on a work night but this event was well worth it. At the end of the night we were sent home with these amazing gift bags filled with summer essentials. The ombre denim bag was from Target and the goodies inside consisted of Urban Decay Moon Dust, Lorac TANtalizer Body Bronzing Spray, Beach Babe Texturizing Sea Salt Spray (beach waves anyone?), Neutrogena Beach Defense Sunscreen, Schick Quattro for Women Trim Style, h2o sea salt skin smoother, Olay Total Effects Moisturizer + Serum Duo, St. Ives Revitalizng Pear & Soy Body Wash, Matrix Exquisite Oil, and an awesome Red Velvet Cake Pop from Sugarella Sweets & Treats that is not pictured because, well I ate it lol.

Last week’s heat wave was just crazy. I love the summer just not at 98 degrees plus humidity. I prefer the temperature to be between 85 and 90 with low humidity. I know that is wishful thinking, but hey I have a right to dream. Right before the summer hits I make sure I have my arsenal of must have items. I am a pretty simple girl and low maintenance during the summer. I want to do as little work as possible when it comes to getting dressed, staying cool, and even applying makeup. So here are my must have items for the summer

Beauty

1. Tinted Moisturizer- I rarely wear foundation in the summer. When it is really hot and I am doing a lot of walking it just melts off. Tinted moisturizer is light and gives you and even complexion with minimal coverage. I am using OCC’s tinted moisturizer and I love it.

2. Bronzer- We all want that Beyonce glow so I use bronzer to get just that. I have like 4 or 5 bronzers but my favorites would have to be Milani Baked Bronzer and Young Blood Lunar Dust

3. Sunscreen- I just raved about the Hawaiian Tropic silk hydration sunscreen. It moisturizes and protects. You can’t get any better than that

4. Oil Absorbing Sheets- I use e.l.f.’s absorbing sheets (you can’t beat $1) and they are great. I mainly get oily in my t-zone so I always have them on hand to erase the shine

5. Perfume/Body Splash- I love The Body Shops Love Etc…- I get tons of compliments whenever I wear it and it is so inexpensive. When I tell people what it is they are shocked. I also love Marc Jacob’s Daisy Eau So Fresh.

6. Wen Deep Cleansing Conditioner- My hair never lasts in the summer. I’m always sweating it out and it sucks. I usually do low maintenance hair styles like buns, bantu knot-outs, twist outs, etc. I wash my hair using Wen Deep Cleansing Conditioner and either let it air dry and do one of the styles listed above.

7. Lip Gloss with spf- Last week I raved about Hawaiian Tropic aloha kiss. It gives great shine and it also has spf. I pair the gloss with any lipstick and I am ready to go.

8. Misting spray- Avene Thermal Spring Water provides the perfect relief from those hot summer days. It also moisturizes your skin.

9. Bold and bright nail polish- Summer time is the perfect time to pull out all of the stops with your nails. So I go for neon pinks, oranges, yellows, greens, turquoise and more!

Fashion

1. Sun glasses! I have tons of sun glasses in all shapes and colors. I love large glasses. I feel like Nicole Richie lol. Sun glasses are the perfect summer accessory- the protect you from the sun and the weirdos on the train trying to make eye contact

2. Tote bag/cross body bag- The tote bag is a necessity because I always carry my life around. It is large enough for some flat sandals, my makeup bag, wallet, water bottle, and just about everything else. The cross body bag is perfect for those spontaneous adventures where a large shoulder bag or tote isn’t necessary. It also forces you to pack light.

3. Maxi dress/skirt- These are the easiest things to throw on and they are so chic. I have dresses and skirts in a variety of colors and prints. This is always my go to outfit choice.

4. Denim shorts- when I don’t feel like wearing a dress I throw on some shorts a t-shirt or tank and depending on the occasion flat sandals or a wedge. You can never go wrong with a pair of denim shorts. Dress them up or down- it really doesn’t matter because they are classic.

5. Cute sandals and wedges- I do a lot of walking in the summer so high heels are out of the question in NYC, unless I’m going from car to chair lol. So I need my sandals to by fashionable and functional. I can strut around the city in a wedge because I get the height of a heel and the comfort of a flat so those are necessary as well.

6. Basics- t-shirts and tanks in all colors and prints. You can never have too many t-shirts or tank tops. If I find a style that fits me well I buy at least 3-4 in various colors. T-shirts and tanks are comfortable and can be paired with almost anything- denim shorts, boyfriend jeans, Bermuda shorts, maxi skirts, body con skirts, a-line skirts, harem pants, cropped pants- you get my drift? They can be dressed up with statement jewelry or worn with a simple necklace and earrings. I couldn’t get through the summer without these.

7. Casual sneakers/flats- I like to be adventurous and go to the park a lot during the summer. I may need to climb a few rocks, you never know so I always have a pair of casual sneakers, like converses or Tom’s handy.

This is my list. What are some of your summer must haves?

On Wednesday I had the opportunity to attend the “Things We Love” Summer Sail event hosted by The Glam Network and sponsored by Hawaiian Tropic. We started the day by boarding the Atlantica at Chelsea Piers and sailed across the Hudson River enjoying great cocktails, food, and conversation. This was the perfect way to spend the afternoon on a Wednesday. We were able to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday and take in the gorgeous view of the Statue of Liberty and the New York City sky line.  I was also in great company with Melissa and Melanie of O So Chic, John Simon from Haute Diary, Makeda from Glamazon Diaries, Shanequa from Temple of Glam, Kitty from KittyBradshaw.com, Christine from Tineey.com and a host of other bloggers.

On the ship we were able to speak to representatives from Hawaiian Tropic and also hear a short presentation. Hawaiian Tropic has a few new products that you definitely want to pick up for the summer.

The newest product is the Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration Lotion Sunscreen. This new and improved formula will give you up to 12 hours of protection and moisturization because of the hydrating ribbons. “The sunscreen papers your skin like no ordinary sunscreen! The breakthrough dual ribbon formula combines superior protection with luxurious, hydrating silk protein to wrap your skin in continuous moisture and help you maintain luminous skin in the sun. Plus, its light, tropical fragrance stimulates your senses for a completely captivating in-sun experience.”

Product Details

  • New Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration™ lotion sunscreen is the only sun protection with extra luxurious hydrating ribbons to pamper your skin with 12 hour moisturization.
  • With hydrating ribbons infused with luxurious silk protein and rich shea butter, Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration™ sunscreen pampers and protects skin.
  • Available in SPF 12, 30 and 50, Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration™ lotion sunscreen provides safe and effective broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection that won’t break down in the sun, along with nourishing antioxidants, exotic island botanicals, a warm tropical fragrance and a lightweight, non-greasy feel.

What I love most about this product is that it is light and non-greasy. Most sunscreens are extremely thick and greasy and this is the total opposite. The hydrating ribbons are also a plus. Within the first application, you feel the major difference in your skin. The fragrance is also wonderful. Other sunscreens tend to have a horrible scent, but you will definitely enjoy the smell of this new product.

Cool Haus Red Velvet Ice Cream Sandwich with Red Velvet and Sugar Cookies and Edible Glam Paper

Other Hawaiian Tropic products that we received were the Hawaiian Tropic Shimmer Effect in coconut papaya. If you want that J. Lo or Beyonce glow, this product is amazing. It is not a bronzer but it does highlight your skin tone. We also received the new Hawaiian Tropic Aloha Kiss moisturizing lip gloss with SPF 20. My flavor is island berry and it will definitely be a staple in my cosmetic bag come this summer.

All of the guests were given amazing gift bags as well. The canvas tote bags were sponsored by Land’s End and filled with products from Starbucks, tarte cosmetics, O.P.I nail polish, Sonia Kashuk, Dove and more.

With today’s 90 degree temperature we know that the summer heat is with us for good, well the next two months at least. We need to make sure our closets and beauty cabinets are stocked with the summer essentials. During the summer months, you want to be as low maintenance as possible. With the humidity and sweltering heat, sometimes it is pretty pointless getting all dolled up. So here are the basics that you need that will keep you fashionable and give you that summer glow.

One thing that I should not have to mention is sunblock. Sunblock is not only a summer essential, it is something that should be worn year round, even in the winter.

  1. Fedora- We need maximum sun protection and a fedora will shade our faces from the UVA and UVB rays.
  2. Aviators- Who said protecting your eyes can’t be fashionable? Aviators are classic and will never go out of style.
  3. Bronzer- Every woman wants that summer glow. Bronzers help you achieve the J. Lo and Beyonce glow and it is in expensive. I have one from CoverGirl that I bought from Target and it was about $7.
  4. Nude lip gloss-If you are too afraid to try the bolder colors for the season like coral or orange, the nude lip is perfect for you.
  5. Tank tops- I have a million in all colors (It is crazy). They are low maintenance and can be dressed up or dressed down and very comfy.
  6. Cut-off shorts- Wear these with a plain tee or tank top and a statement necklace and a cute pair of flat sandals and you are ready to hit the streets.
  7. Sundress- Summer dresses are feminine, cute, and flirty. Perfect for picnics, bbqs, or summer concerts
  8. Cute flat sandals- This is self-explanatory really. Cute sandals are a must. They can be worn with cute summer dresses and shorts
  9. Canvas tote- I love large bags! I can throw everything in the bag and not feel weighed down. A large canvas tote is perfect for the summer because there is enough space for a sweater if you go to a place where there is an AC, flat sandals-just in case you’re on the move, books, magazines, and all of the essentials.
  10. Tinted moisturizer-During the summer it is too hot for foundation. You can achieve the same coverage as foundation, but it is not as heavy and if you perspire a lot this is the best option.

Don’t forget to drink lots of water! You want to stay hydrated. You can have an iced caramel coffee from DD also :-)

I hope this list keeps you cool and fashionable throughout the summer. Stock up now ladies.
