Chanel Iman is really making her mark in the fashion world. She is a newbie to the runways, but she is one of the most sought after super models. She is on every magazine cover, strutting down the runways in top designer looks, and now she is a Victoria Secret Angel. She is definitely setting the standard!

Two of my favorite fashionistas are in the latest issues of Honey Magazine! Angela and Vanessa Simmons are positive role models for young black girls today. We have very few positive role models that actually get media coverage…you have to be sleeping with someone…or overly sexual in my opinion to make the “News” but these young ladies uphold the ideals of their family and respect themselves.

Angela on her virginity:

Ok, the whole virginity thing came out because of the breakup I had previously. And on the show, of course, it came up that I was saving myself for marriage. Is it weird that people know that now? Yeah, kind of. Do I care that much? Not really, because it’s not like it’s a bad thing. No, it’s not for everybody. Everybody doesn’t have to wait because that’s not what they feel their destiny is. But this is what I have to do in order to get a relationship where it’s all good. I just think that when the sex factor is taken out of the relationship, you really get to know a person.

Is it easy? No. I mean, I’m meeting these guys and they’ve been doing whatever they’ve been doing and it’s like, “Are you serious?” Yeah, I’m serious and if you like me enough then you’re going to wait and you’re going to respect me and hopefully you’re not going to cheat because you, as a man, “need” it. I think it’s a good thing. I’m showing a guy that I can wait and hold off and it’s been a whole year and I haven’t even done it. I think it’s an eye opener to some guys.

Vanessa and Angela on hair weaves: I just took out all my extensions and Media Takeout’s like, “Oh, we don’t believe it” but it’s all my hair.
Angela: At the end of the day, we got hair under these weaves.

Couture-visual art within fashion and graffiti-visual art with the roots grounded in the streets (literally) and the two elements combined produced some of the most profound images I have seen in a while. Two independent elements, both which are able to stand strong alone, but when brought together, it makes you appreciate each. It seems like an oxy-moron to have graffiti and couture together, because you really wouldn’t see a person walking the graffiti filled streets in a one of a kind couture piece so I appreciate the creativity and the beauty of both elements.

amerie

Amerie looks stunning strutting her stuff on the streets of NY! Earlier in the week I did a post about Fur Vests (Don’t Call Peta) and she looks absolutely amazing witht he belted tunic and rocker boots. The subtle combination of neutrals makes this outfit great. You don’t always need a bright color to make an outfit pop. Add a killer boot, a great belt, or a show stopping piece like this vest to turn heads.

Amerie is also featured in COMPLEX magazine’s latest issue. She talks about men and cheating:

Amerie3

Men say: If I’ve only been seeing a woman for a month, I’m not expected to be exclusive.

Amerie says: Unless it’s been explicitly stated that you two are exclusive, it’s best to assume you’re not. Women date men—as in going out on “dates”—and feel awkward if they run into him on a date with someone else. Trust me, if a man doesn’t say so, he’s not exclusive and probably sleeping with someone else.

Amerie4

Men say: Cheating is only an issue if you get caught.

Amerie says: One of the consequences of cheating is that you only trust somebody as much as you trust yourself. Even the whole line of “wanting space”—they’ve probably already cheated at least once. It’s thinking, “I don’t want to risk losing this person, so instead of being honest, I’ll put them on the side while I get all this stuff out my system.”

Amerie6

Men say: Women settle more easily than men.

Amerie says: Men rarely settle; they won’t wife up someone they don’t feel is worthy of them. A woman can persistently chase a man, and he may sleep with her, but it’ll never make him love her. Yet a guy that a woman’s not interested in can hound her, and if he’s persistent enough, he’ll wear her down. Women are more malleable. Yet, we’re still the smarter sex. Men can’t handle the truth about women—that we can be as noncommittal, manipulative, and promiscuous as they are.

Amerie is proving herself to be one to watch when it comes to fashion. This red blazer is KILLER!!!

black-face1Ok so Halloween was Saturday and many people took advantage of the costume gimmick to be racially offensive. I don’t know about any of you, but this is not amusing to me at all. I saw about 5 different pics of Caucasians in black face (some were taken with African-Americans) and they are just “shuckin and jivin” laughing and smiling like its not a problem. Am I missing something? Is this becoming socially acceptable? This is blatant disrespect of my culture. I know they say history repeats itself, but seriously I am not about to go down the same road our ancestors and civil rights leaders faught and died for in order for me to be accepted and treated “equally” People are probably saying “Nique, it’s just a costume, it is not that serious” but tell that to the student who was sent home from school because he was white and came dressed as a mammy. We can’t keep ignoring this blatant disrespect. We have come to far, although many people are setting us back decades, I am not reliving the past. I saw a white woman dressed as Little Wayne and another as T-Pain. So what does that say about the entertainers and how they are representing our culture? (I think T-Pain is a fool anyway, but that’s not my point). If we keep brushing off these subtle acts of racism then it won’t be long before we are reliving the past.

black-face2

There has been a lot of controversy surrounding these ads and also Tyra’s use of black face on one of the recent episodes of ANTM. Fashion or not this is not acceptable. If you want to have the image of a black and a white model in some type of conflict….HIRE A BLACK MODEL. Please spare me the “deep down inside they want to be like us. They tan their skin, get breast and butt implants, they try to dress like us, and they even want our men, so I take this as a compliment….blah blah blah.” Save it and stop being ignorant. Yes we have many attributes that Caucasian women would like, but still instead of PERPETRATING and IMITATING us, appreciate us and give us the respect we deserve.

What are your thoughts?
