In Other News: Weekend Recap

Happy Monday!

I hope you all and a fashionably fly weekend. The whether in NYC was simply beautiful. I am super excited for spring! So here’s what’s happening in the crazy world of entertainment.

Beyonce and Tina Knowles are opening up a cosmetology school right here in Brooklyn. The school is called “The Beyonce Cosmetology Center”

According to the press release, the program is “a seven-month cosmetology training course for adult men and women.” L’Oréal has donated all the products to be used at the center, and their spokeswoman Beyoncé, along with her mother, have pledged to donate $100,000 annually. After brief remarks by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Tina Knowles, among others, Beyoncé graciously took to the podium to explain both her ties to the house — she first visited in 2007 as part of research for her role as Etta James in “Cadillac Records” — and her hopes for the program.

Motivation Monday: Mobility

“You cannot step into the same river twice”

Pastor Luis Carlo was the guest pastor at church yesterday and his message was phenomenal. He touched on one specific topic but he pretty much summed up my feelings for the past few months in regards to work. I’m not going to get into the details about work (it is a small world) but his message was titled “Perspectives on Mobility: The Arrow is Beyond You.” So first we defined mobility:

Mobility-noun- the quality or state of being capable of moving or changing quickly from one state or condition to another

As we all may no the only thing that is constant in life is change. Life is full of movement and transitions. Even when it comes to the various stages of life, we grow from an infant to a toddler and so forth. Change is something that we cannot control. People try to control change by remaining stagnant, but that is just hurting the person who is trying to prevent the inevitable. Pastor Carlo said “culture resists change. With culture, you enjoy traditions because of the safety of the status quo.” So people who refuse to change often get left behind and miss great opportunities that life has to offer.

The Green Room: ASOS Africa Collection

posted by:

In an effort to “promote people and the planet” UK based clothing brand ASOS has launched the Green Room which will feature various collections using organic materials inspired by various cultures of the world. One of the first collections from the Green Room is The Africa Collection.

ASOS released this statement “On our continuing quest to find new inspiration for ASOS.com collections, we recently spent time in Africa working with artisans and small producer groups. The vibrancy of the continent inspired us to create ‘ASOS Africa’ with the aim of supporting trade in Africa.”

The looks in this collection are made from original African print fabrics and they are also crafted using special design techniques within the African community. I appreciate ASOS.com in diversifying their collections and educating their consumers on various cultures around the world.

Tribal inspired looks are great for the spring. Here are a few of the looks from the ASOS Africa Collection:

ASOS Africa Woven Mix T-Shirt Dress $95

ASOS Africa Printed Playsuit $85

ASOS Africa  Printed Tie Waist Shorts $70

ASOS Africa Printed Jumpsuit $130

Motivation Monday: Choice

“To live is to choose. But to choose well, you must know who you are and what you stand for, where you want to go and why you want to get there.” Kofi Annan

Choice-noun- the act or power of selection

Almost everything that occurs in a person’s life is based on choice. Certain things like ethnicity, gender, height etc. are not something that we have control over. The things that we do have control over, we need to exercise proper judgement and spiritual discernment. Our choices lead to some type of action that will lead to a reaction and possibly some type of consequence.

Motivation Monday: Opportunity

posted by:

I hope all of you had great weekend full of fun and love :-) Today is Monday the start of a new work week for most and so this Motivation Monday post is about opportunity.

“Don’t wait for extraordinary opportunities. Seize common occassions and make them great. Weak men wait for opportunities; strong men make them.” Orison Swett marden

Sometimes opportunities don’t “knock” at the door, you have to go to the door yourself and open it to make your own way. People don’t realize that success does not just come to you, you have to WORK for it. People are afraid to work. In order to reap benefits you must sow and sowing involves work. What you put in to something you will get in return. It’s called reciprocity.

People complain about their current relationships, living arrangements, and jobs, but what opportunities are you creating for yourself to change your situation? This is 2010 and we cannot just sit around thinking that what we want is going to fall into our lap. Sorry to tell you, but it does not work that way. We need to be strong, confident, and secure to go after what we want. Sure we will have our weak moments, but we cannot let those keep us down. Go after what you want and create your own opportunities. Create your own path if you do not want to follow anyone else’s path. You have to make your won way sometimes and let today be the day. If there is something in your life that you want to change and make better, GO FOR IT. Fear is mental, so don’t be afraid to try have a postive attitude and things will start to change.  You must remember though that CHANGE IS A PROCESS, NOT AN EVENT (Pastor A.R. Bernard) so if it is not going to happen tomorrow, but start today to make that change and create the opportunities you will need to have a better life.

*This post is my motivation…I need to act and create my own way. Actions speak louder than words*

RIP Alexander McQueen

posted by:

As reported by the Huffington Post

McQueen was born in the East End of London on March 17, 1969. His father was a taxi driver and as a child he made dresses for his three sisters. As a teenager he apprenticed on Savile Row–where he made suits for Prince Charles and Mikhail Gorbachev –before attending Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. It was his graduation collection that caught the eye of influential stylist Isabella Blow. The two became fast and dear friends until Blow committed suicide on May 7, 2007. McQueen dedicated his spring 2008 collection to her.

McQueen was named England’s designer of the year four times between 1996 and 2003.

This is crazy! You think a person who has practically the world is happy and satisfied, but in all reality they are battling so many demons inside. Please cherish life. Even when things seem unbearable and that you can’t go on seek to higher power for strength. God is your strength.

My condolences to his family, friends, and everyone who knew him personally and were influenced by his work. This is definitely a great loss to the world of fashion, but lets celebrate the great things he has done.
