NATURAL Hair Chronicles: Basics and Essentials

My friend and former classmate Nigeria asked me to do a few posts on natural hair care, I was supposed to do this post a little ago, but I am now getting to it (sorry). Although my hair is not natural (I considered going through the transition) I did my research and compiled a list of basics and essentials for women with natural (chemical free) hair styles.

Essentials

Sulfate free shampoo
Silicone free instant and deep conditioner
Daily moisturizer or grease with no mineral oil or petrolatum
Daily leave in conditioner
Good natural oils
Silicone based heat protectants.

Reading the ingredients listed for products at the local beauty supply store or drugstore and watching product reviews from other women will help determine which products have helpful ingredients as opposed to harmful.

Basics

Plastic wide tooth comb
Denman brush or boar bristle brush (some would advise no brushes of any kind)
Hair clips that are hair stress free
Metal free elastic bands
Satin or silk scarf, pillow cover, or bonnet

Hair Chronicles: Summer Hair Styles Pt. 1

Summer is my favorite season, but I hate what the heat and humidity does to my hair! My hair is relaxed and I have a hard time styling my hair in the summer other than my usual wraps or pony tails. When I wear my hair wrapped, I end up putting it in a ponytail because it puffs up from sweat and the humidity. It is really annoying. I find myself needing to get my hair done every week rather than every two weeks.

My mom has this issue also. So a few months ago I bought this Enzo Milano clipless curling iron and I only used it once. I loved how it curled my hair and the curls lasted for about 2-3 days (with minor touch ups on the third day).

I also braided my hair to get the crinkle effect and that lasted a few days also and it gave me the same look as the clipless curling iron. So I am going to try this look again. It is low maintenance and cute. If my hair puffs up because of the humidity it won’t really matter because the twists/curls/crinkles will camouflage my puffy roots. Hopefully this style will survive the heat this weekend.

Hair Chronicles: To Cut or Not To Cut?

So I have been contemplating on cutting my hair again for some time now. In August I cut my hair into an inverted bob and it has grown back I don’t know if I want to cut it again or if I want to continue to let it grow. So here are some looks of celebrities who have made the cut and some who have abandoned the short do and went for long luxurious locks.

I love Dawn’s new cut!!!! When I saw her on American Idol last week I wanted to make an appointment immediately to get this look. Of course that didn’t happen but I am still contemplating…

Selita Ebanks looks great with long or short hair but I would have to go with the shorter look here

Keri Hilson’s short due gave her an edge. She just kind of blends in now

Malinda Williams was known for her short cut but I like the long hair

Toni Braxton has shed some years with her short do!

Sesilee Lopez the short look definitely sets her apart from other models

Vanessa Simmons has chopped off her long tresses and now has a short curly cropped do. I actually like the shorter look. It gives her a bit more edge.

Our favorite Barbie (sarcasm) is on the set of her new video “Roger That.” I must say if I hear another girl say”and you can roger that” I am going to scream!! I guess that’s what happens when you work in a high school right? Anyway….so today’s Rock It or Drop It is the courtesy of Nicki Minaj’s two-toned hair. Half blonde and half pink so ladies is this “what’s hot on the streets?”

So a few weeks ago there was a huge controversy over Willow Smith’s Rihanna-esque hair cut. Many people disapproved of the look saying that Willow is too young to rock such an edgy look (she’s 9 yrs old) so Essence.com got an exclusive interview with Marcia Hamilton and got the Inside Scoop on Willows cut…

“Willow’s cut was a decision made between her and Jada, and I executed their vision,” says Hamilton. “Willow’s a fierce little girl with energy, imagination and spunk. We wanted to give her a look that represented all of those things, and was easy to care for. Once I started cutting, Willow actually requested the clippers! Look, it’s 2010. Can’t our little girls move into the future without ruffling feathers? The look is fun, empowering, anti-relaxer and anti-weave. More women need to steer their little girls in this direction. If your child is a forward-thinker, you should guide her instead of smothering her.” via Essence.com

I think the cut is a little too edgy for a 9 year old, but she is not my daughter. What is she in like 4th grade? I think some things are just a little too inappropriate, but in Hollywood anything goes. I do agree with allowing a child to express themselves creatively through their style, but when they are a bit older and have a better understanding of themselves, the world around them, and their place in the world. At 9 you think it is all about fun and a Hollywood 9 year old is not the same as a “normal” 9 year-old. Hamilton’s point about the cut being anti-relaxer and anti-weave…9 yr olds shouldn’t wear weaves either in my opinion of course. The cut is cute in general, but at that age I don’t feel it is appropriate and there are also many limitations when it comes to “style” in the “real world” not necessarily “Hollywood.” Parents and people need to keep that in mind.

Product Review: Enzo Milano Clipless Curling Iron

Last week Thursday I attended the Shecky’s Holiday Night Out event. As soon as I stepped through the door, I was spotted by a sales rep for the Enzo Milano company. I have been wearing my hair in waves for the past 2 weeks. Last week my hair was wavy, but I would cornrow my hair at night and apply mousse so the waves would stay. So the sales rep asked me to sit down and gave his lil speal but when he did the demo I was totally sold!! He used the ceramic flat iron and clipless curling iron and I actually purchased both. The curling iron is wonderful!!! I will post a video and pics…after Christmas because I am expecting a camera lol but I would recommend this product to anyone. I curled my hair Saturday evening and my curls lasted well into Monday. It curls your hair in a matter of seconds and the great part is that your hair does not burn. I used to hate smelling my hair as I flat ironed it or curled it. You do not need any products and your hair will become shiny and soft. I am not getting paid for this review lol (I wish) but I would suggest you all look into to it. I would purchase the small or medium size curling iron. With the small iron you can create different size waves and that is limited if you choose a larger iron (depending on hair length). Look out for the video and pics next week!

National Real Hair Day!!!

Today is National Real Hair Day!!! Tyra Banks is kicking off the new season of her talk show by rocking her natural hair! Now that is big! Especially in today’s society where weaves and lacefronts have TAKEN OVER!!! I counted about 15 lacefronts while shopping at BJs last Friday…and they were horrible! One girl’s lacefront started at her eyebrows!! I realized I was staring too long when she gave me a stink look lol…but anyway….tune in today for the premiere of the Tyra Show on the CW!
