“I AM NOT MY  HAIR” Solange continues to prove her critics wrong about her choice of cutting off her long locks. She looks absolutely amazing (maybe a little too much fringe on the shirt). She is giving us a different side of beauty. People often equate beauty with the length of someone’s hair, but as you can see Solange proves that theory wrong. At first when I came back from vacation and I saw her I was like “WHAT?” Now, I am like “WOW” (at a loss for words lol) Hair doesn’t define beauty! Beauty is definitely subjective, but just because you have long hair, it doesn’t mean you are more beautiful. We  need to get the “music video” image of beauty out of our head. I recently cut my hair (Kudos to me) I didn’t go as short as Solange (my head is too big for that) but it felt good to let my hair go. My hair was fairly long, but now I have a cute little bob and I love it!!!! Hair is like a boy, you cut it off, it comes right  back…so ladies if you want to “Let it go” Do so, it is a liberating feeling.

This week has been a great week for minority women in fashion. Rihanna is making her mark in the fashion world, and lets not forget the young black and hispanic women who rule the runways! Finally we get to see people like us in the forefront of fashion!

Chanel Iman, Sessilee Lopez, Jourdan Dunn & Arlenis Sosa. Young minority women doing it up on the runways. We need more young women like them on the runways!

Rihanna

Rihanna is finally getting the recognitiion she deserves in the fashion world! I am not a fan of her voice, but I would love to shop her closet! She is will be on the Autumn 2009 cover of Vogue Italia Extreme Couture. This is perfect for Rihanna because some of her looks, only she can pull off! Kudos to her.

*I guess Hov has done it again* ALL  BLACK EVERYTHING!

Dance, singer, actress, friend, daughter, sister, role model, trendsetter Aaliyah held many titles. She was indeed someone special to the music industry and to the world. Aaliyah was one of my main inspirations for becoming a dancer. Her movement was so fluid and seemed so effortless. She made it cool for girls to wear baggy jeans, cut off tops, and let us not forget the infamous swoop! When people speak about her, they always use angel in the same sentence. She was truly a blessing to everyone she met. I remember when I was younger Aaliyah was signing autographs at Macy*s Downtown Brooklyn. I stood on what seemed like the longest line of my life for the autograph of my favorite entertainer. Her sudden death startled everyone because it seemed like she was just beginning to get the recognition she deserved.  Her music and her legacy are timeless. Aaliyah was an inspiration and even though she is not here with us physically, she still inspires many today.

Aaliyah truly embodied wha HerGoodyBag stands for. Besides her little stint with R. Kelly (I blame her mother) she was never in the media for negative reasons. She carried herself as a respectable young woman with class. She respected herself and others, hence why she is loved by so many today.

“We Need A Resolution” Aaliyah

One of my all time favorite songs and videos period!

I know this is late, but I was unable to post this yesterday…internet connection problems

For years comedian Mo’Nique has bashed and blasted skinny women and promoted the message of self-love to women who are plus-size. All of her jokes stemmed around why plus-size women were better and that skinny women can’t offer men anything. She mimicked Beyonce and showed plus-size women that they could wear whatever they want (I don’t agree with this! Skinny women can’t even wear whatever they want lol) I applaud Mo’Nique and her confidence. She did not let her size deter her from her dreams of becoming one of the most successful comedians of our generation. It wasn’t unitl recently Mo’Nique had a change of heart, which also resulted in a change of size being that she lost 40lbs.
Mo’Nique, the woman who let it be known that it was ok to have a little extra meat on your bones has lost weight and wants to lose more. So people are asking, “why does she want to be skinny?” Mo’Nique stated “it’s not about being skinny, it’s about being healthy.” Mo’Nique is 5’6 and was over 200lbs. She was subjected to diseases like diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol and so forth. As a mother of 3 children, ages 3 (twins) and 19 she began to think about them. She said losing the weight has made a huge difference in all aspects of her life. She doesn’t want to be the size of models you see in the magazine but she does want to live a healthier lifestyle so that she can be around to raise her children and God-willing see her grandchildren.

Sherri Shephard of the view also lost some weight 41lbs and she looks fabulous. It is one thing to be comfortable in your body, but be comfortable while being healthy. As stated in a previous post about self-image, every women isn’t meant to be a size 2. Size does not matter, what matter is being healthy. Whether you are a size 4 or a size 14 you should exercise regularly and be selective of what goes inside of your body (food, drinks, etc.) You are stuck with that body for the rest of your life, so you should do whatever it takes to make sure you stay healthy. Kudos to Sherri and Mo’Nique for not only changing their size but also changing their lifestyle! Being healthy is a lifestyle and so lets do right by ourselves by doing right by our bodies.

As you all may know, here at HGB, we love the Simmons Sisters. Vanessa and Angela are true examples of what and HGB Go-Getter is. This episode of Daddy’s Girls touched on many topics such as respect, dependency, and consideration. I really enjoyed this episode, although it was very scripted, the show was still relatable…except for camping…I’ve never gone, my ideas of camping have been tainted thanks to Jason, Michael Myers, and the other weirdo killers.

Since Danielle, Angela’s best friend from childhood, has moved into their home in LA its been nothing but drama. She is very inconsiderate and lacks respect for other people’s property and space. Vanessa’s toothpaste was minimal compared to her having her dog eat cheetos off of Jessica’s bed…smh. Although she wasn’t welcomed from the start, we will not play the blame game for who’s fault it was for her leaving (her own). I think Danielle’s “visit” taught valuable lessons, just because you are friends doesn’t mean you can live with each other. I’m pretty sure their friendship will be stronger if she was back in New York, because she was beginning to cause tension between everyone in the house. Jessica was a little rude when she told her to sleep on the couch though…that was funny. Danielle also taught Angela that she needs to be more responsible and speak up instead of being deceitful and going behind people’s back. I think if Angela was upfront and Danielle was more considerate she would’ve fit right in with the girls.
Angela and Vanessa’s friend Lynn (not pictured) convinced the girls to go camping. Now Angela and Vanessa are truly Hollywood!!! Who packs a crimping iron and flat iron when they go camping in the woods? I was with Jessica like “where are you going to plug up your hair tools?” I just shook my head. Where’s the bathroom? you have a plethora of trees to choose from. Oh, and who fries fish with a stick over an open flame? lol The cell phone scene was hilarious because I would be just like them, especially Angela with her salad and tent. This shows how dependant this generation is on technology. Some people are just not cut out for the frontier. Kudos to the people who actually go camping and love the great outdoors, but that’s just not my cup of tea. Overall, I thought it was a pretty good show.
