Focus is a central point, as of attraction, attention, or activity according to dictionary.com

My pastor preached this message for Watch Night Service on New Year’s. I found this quote by Tony Robbins that states,

One reason so few of us achieve what we truly want is that we never direct our focus; we never concentrate our power. Most people dabble their way through life, never deciding to master anything in particular.

The part of this quote that stuck out to me is the first part that says, “One reason so few of us achieve what we truly want is that we never direct our focus; we never concentrate our power.”Β I found this to be exceptionally true for me. I consider my self to be a “goal digger,” and I set goals for all aspects of my life, but it is a struggle accomplishing those goals. I know that success is definitely a journey, but in many areas of my life, I feel like my journey could have been shorter if only I was focused. Some people may say that it wasn’t right because of God’s timing. God gave us free will so that we can make our own decisions. Some of the decisions that we make derail us from God’s plan, so he now has to redirect our steps and it takes us longer than he intended.

So in order to focus you have to know what focus is…

  1. the late Leslie Orgel summarized his analysis of the proposal by stating, “There is at present no reason to expect that multistep cycles such as the reductive citric acid cycle will self-organize on the surface of FeS/FeS2 or some other mineral.” It is possible that another type of metabolic pathway was used at the beginning of life. For example, instead of the reductive citric acid cycle, the “open” acetyl-CoA pathway (another one of the five recognised ways of carbon dioxide fixation in nature today) would be compatible with the idea of self-organisation on a metal sulfide surface. The key enzyme of this pathway, carbon monoxide dehydrogenase/acetyl-CoA synthase harbours mixed nickel-iron-sulfur clusters in its reaction centers and catalyses the formation of acetyl-CoA (which may be regarded as a modern form of acetyl-thiol) in a single step.

  3. Great reminder to focus! It’s so easy to be distracted by the bright, shiny things! Thanks! #SITS blogging

  4. Ug, I am truly terrible at focusing on anything anymore. I’m not sure if it comes with age or just a side effect of having children, but my mind is everywhere all of the time. I can’t focus on anything that I’m doing in the moment, so I certainly can’t focus on accomplishing goals for the future. Thanks for your thought provoking words, I’m sure I’ll mull them over and over while I’m supposed to be focusing on something else πŸ˜‰ haha!

  5. With 5 kids ages 3- to 8-years old, my focus is different than is on your list. My focus requires intense concentration, but has intense disruption and fragment πŸ™‚ However, I don’t let it stop me and somehow have managed to keep a blog and write for The Huffington Post against all odds.

  6. *fragmentation* lol

  7. Can I please just saw while I was reading this post, I was stirring tea, putting a hair clip in my daughter’s hair, sending a text to my boss, answering work emails, and helping my school-aged kid get out the door?? I THINK THE GOOD LORD IS TRYING TO TELL ME SOMETHING! Thanks for the awesome reminder πŸ™‚

  8. This is a great reminder! Thanks for sharing.

  9. That quote is great. I couldn’t agree more. I never really thought about focusing. As a mother I feel like my mind is always in many different aces at one time. I’ll have to keep this concept in mind.

  10. Self discovery can break open many doors and opportunities!

  11. I struggle with staying focused. I plan like a mad lady but being able to stay focused long enough to put the plan in action is my down fall. I’m working on that…

  12. Need to work on this. It seems like I have so many things in mind that I want to do and I try to do them at the same time, it usually ends up in disappointment. Thanks for the wonderful reminder.
Dropping by from SITS! Have a great day!

  13. I have a hard time picking what I want to focus on and until I make that decision I’m scatterbrained. Once I decided I’m usually ok but I can never seem to remember how much better I feel when I am focus, so I let distractions follow me around. Great post!

  14. My focus is so out of whack right now because all it does anymore is snow. I am always more focused when I can be outside in the sun. I am less distracted then. Like now, I should be doing some housework, but I am blogging. Oh wait, I need to get to the store. See what I mean? πŸ˜‰

  15. I so struggle with this. It is so hard when we are forced to constantly multi-task. Stopping by from SITs. Have a great evening. πŸ™‚

  16. Focus is SO key. I think I’m starting to lose mine, and this post will help me to reset. Thank you! Dropping by from SITS!

  17. I am coming from this from a psychology perspective but focus and motivation are really key to achieving one’s goals. Well, first you have to set them and then keep yourself focused and motivated to reach them. Where there is a will, there is usually a way:)

  18. It is like you are speaking directly to me! I am running a mile a minute and it is so hard to focus with so much going on! I use my essential oils to help me balance out and focus, but ultimately, we all need to slow down which is so hard in our society! Thanks for sharing! #SITSblogging

  19. It’s so cool to stumble on your blog post. My word for 2014 is focus. I know I’ve been lacking it in the past and I already feel better with how things have been going since I’ve made focus a top priority. It makes a tremendous difference!

  20. Focus – definitely something I need to “focus” on!
