Archives for September 2013

I remember the last time I went to Kohl’s I said I’m not coming back for a while because they take all of my money. I would spend a certain amount and get Kohl’s Cash and would have a week to spend it so I would be back in Kohl’s earning more and spending more. It was definitely a vicious cycle and that was before I had any self control lol. Now I think I have a reason to go back besides the Daisy Fuentes Collection, Elle Collection, and Jennifer Lopez Collection, Kohl’s now has a collection with one of my favorite designers, Catherine Malandrino. I always love to see her show during Fashion Week because it is definitely refreshing and . I always said in my next life when I’m a millionaire I will probably have a closet full of her pieces, well now I can make that dream come true even if I’m far from being a millionaire.

Catherine Malandrino recently released a collection with one of my favorite retailers Kohl’s and the collection is definitely worth the drive to Rego Center Mall (the place with the nearest Kohl’s). Take a look at the collection

They are currently having a sale with everything 25% off so you may want to head to your nearest Kohl’s or shop online by clicking here

For this installment of “Style Files” I’m featuring three very distinct looks from three very fashionable women. I would wear each of these looks because they all suit some part of my style and personality. Check out Tia Mowry, Tamar Braxton, and Eve!

Pictures106-001

Ok for Tia’s look I would definitely wear this to work or church. It is sophisticated and modern. The printed skirt paired with the cream blouse and blue cardi is perfect for this type of fall weather, and you can still wear sandals, but I’d probably opt for a pair of open-toe booties.

Eve’s dress at the BET Hip Hop Awards was stunning. You can never go wrong with black and the sequin and intricate hemline is what makes this dress standout. Her soft curls red lip and wine colored shoes are the perfect compliment. My birthday is Wednesday and this is a look I’d wear to my birthday gathering if I was having one lol.

Last but not least we have Tamar Braxton in a black leather sweatsuit paired with red Christian Louboutin heels. Of course the red shoes are the show stoppers and this look is great for a girl’s night out.

Although they are three distinct looks, which look fits your personality and style best?

So on September 15, 2013 at 4:21am I magically awoke from my deep sleep and checked twitter to see if they released the Phillip Lim for Target collection online and to my surprise they did. I stumbled out of my bed to get my computer to shop my little heart out. I did not want to deal with the lines and the crowds so I thought online shopping was my best option. I knew which piece I wanted definitely (The Boom Sweatshirt), but I was still conflicted on what else to purchase. Many of the New York bloggers that I follow happened to shop the pre collection during fashion week and started wearing their pieces already, and although they looked great in everything (Shout out to Glam Nikki) I wasn’t sure if the pieces I thought I wanted were for me. Plus I’m trying to be a “smarter shopper.” Many of the pieces that I wanted I knew that I wouldn’t get that many wears out of them because of the distinct patterns. I needed to get the pieces that were the most functional for my wardrobe and the pieces that I absolutely loved, not just liked. I also set a specific budget that I did not want to break.

So I ended up choosing four things. After weeks of waiting for my purchases to arrive they finally came last week! I was so excited. Although online shopping is less of a hassle, the waiting time sucks.

Later that day I went to Target with my mother and there were tons of pieces left and in my size. They were all over the place but I was able to see if I missed anything online and I didn’t. I got everything that I wanted and needed, with the exception of one handbag. I was looking for a presentation clicker in electronics and saw one of the workers stashing bags behind the register to purchase later. If she had the bag that I wanted you know I would have said something, but she didn’t so I let her slide lol.

I’m just happy that I can finally wear the things that I purchased and carry the oh so fabulous bags! Ok I know I’m about 2 weeks late, but hey it’s better late than never.

I was reading one of my devotionals yesterday morning from the YouVersion Bible App (If you don’t have it, download it ASAP. It is an amazing APP). and the focus was about facing storms. Throughout life we will face many trials and tribulations because avoiding adversity is impossible, but what do you do during the storm?

I can generally read a person’s mood or emotions pretty accurately, and especially in my line of work I need to know if someone is going through a “storm.” It’s funny that once I read this devotional I started to think if I wear my emotions, my moods, and my problems in my facial expressions, and body language. The last few weeks have been extremely stressful and many people have said that it looks like something is wrong and that I’m not being myself. I am not one to run to Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter to broadcast my issues like other people.

God doesn’t want us to wear our problems. When we do that people offer advice and sometimes we seek others before we seek Him. Often times we go to God when the problem is out of our control. We want Him to fix what is happening when we should’ve gone to Him first. Of course sometimes we want to vent and just want someone to listen, but before venting we should pray. Pray that God keeps us calm in the midst of the storm. If we believe that He is who He says He is then we know that we already have the victory. That will make our testimony that much greater.

We have to praise God during the good times and the bad times. When we pray and give our problems to God, He’ll reveal the answers to our problems. He’ll put us in the right places with the right people in order to be triumphant. We just have to trust Him. We just have to be still and not broadcast the storm, but broadcast the victory of how God brought us through the storm.

Psalms 46:10 says,

Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.

We just have to have faith and know that He is not a man that He should lie. We have to trust Him to guide us in the right direction to be victorious.

Ok so I have a serious love/hate relationship with my hair. Sometimes I get bored and want to do something drastic or new. Sometimes, I’m too afraid to do anything and just rock my classic wrap. Sometimes I want to try new things like experiment with different colors, but I have relaxed/texlaxed hair, which means that it is chemically straightened. I have to take extra care of my hair because I have two (sometimes three) different textures that I’m working with. I have to make sure my hair is always moisturized to prevent unnecessary breakage. I’ve been wanting to experiment with color lately, but I was too afraid to commit and I have also been on a strict hair regimen to get my hair thicker and longer.

I was given the chance to review Clairol Professional Classic Collection hair dye for my own DIY hair dye project. I had to select from 16 different colors to use.

Classic makes a comeback. Clairol Professional’s new ‘Classic Collection’ offers 16 timeless shades with a modern formula for brilliant shine and deep conditioning.

I selected to the shade 6N which is the Class Dark Neutral Blonde. I told quite a few of my friends that I was dying my hair blonde and they almost freaked out! It was too funny! I chose that shade because it reminded me of light brown and I have shades of this “dark blonde” in my natural hair.

I was a little nervous about this process because I’ve never dyed my hair or anyone’s hair ever in life. I’ve only given myself a rinse, so I was actually a little surprised at how easy it was to use the dye.

Because my hair has recently been processed I was unable to use the dye on my hair so I dyed some hair extensions (100% Peruvian Human Hair) Check out THE EASIEST dye process ever.

I first prepped my work station and placed an old towel and three sheets of aluminum foil down on the table. Then I poured the developer and hair color into the mixing bowl.

I mixed the products together thoroughly and got this color here…

I then combed out the hair and laid it flat on the aluminum foil. Notice the color of the hair is a dark deep brown. I was a little nervous because I wasn’t sure if the hair would be able to be lightened without the use of bleach or stripping the hair color.

I then applied the mixture to both sides of the hair and wrapped the hair in the foil and let sit for 45-minutes. The color went from a milky beige to a dark brown once I removed the aluminum foil.

Here is the end result (all photos were taken in natural light without flash)

You can clearly see that the hair has been lightened. When I first unwrapped the foil I was a little nervous because it looked like it did when it started. I washed the dye out and applied a conditioner to the hair and rinsed thoroughly. Then I used a blowdryer to dry the hair and this was the end result.

It turned out to be a a nice sandy brown which matches my natural hair completely. I can’t wait to add these extensions my hair to add more body and fullness to my natural hair.

The prep and coloring process took about 15-minutes. The time that it took to process the color was about 45-minutes, which is the max time recommended on the box. The only problem that I did have the process was the strong smell of ammonia from the dye.

Stay tuned to see the final results!
