Last Wednesday (February 16, 2011) I attended the Rebecca Minkoff Seminar hosted by the Learning Annex. I had my camera but no memory card so this was the picture I took on my Blackberry.

Rebecca Minkoff started off with the history of her company and her main struggles trying to make it in this industry. She talked about when she first started making a profit, when she hired her first employee, and also the benefits and downsides of working with department stores.

She gave valuable information on marketing. Here is some of the advice Rebecca Minkoff gave on starting a new company or lifestyle brand

When starting a company or lifestyle brand:

  • Focus on one product or niche to build your brand
  • Get creative make your own post cards to promote your business
  • Define your demographic…know who you are marketing to
  • Quirky things work! Find fun and innovative ideas for marketing (Ceativity is key)
  •  Social media is KEY. Use Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and other social networking to your advantage.
  • Network with bloggers! Unlike magazines which come out once a month, bloggers can get information about your company to their readers quickly.
  • Go to tradeshows, trunk shows, and other events to learn about new products and your competition
  • Build relationships that are meaningful. Get to know the PR reps!
  • Do your research! Research trends, PR companies, show rooms, designers. You must stay abreast with new information.

Most of the other information went directly with starting a handbag company, but the information listed above can help anyone starting a company or building a brand.
